Just finished reading Lawrence Wright’s latest book God Save Texas; A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State. I recommended this book so much that I have attached a purchase link below. Why do I love it? I do because Wright took me on a journey of discovery. From the grand story of Texas oil, the Alamo, the civil rights movement, to witnessing important discussions at the 2017 Texas legislative process to a captivating, almost romantic, camping trip in the Big Bend.
Wright’s book is not political nor partisan, but a window into present-day issues presented through interviews and keen observations based on historical and cultural traditions of this legendary state. He dissects perceptions and separates them from reality with a cunning ease.
I read about towns that I had never heard before, and the music legends Texas has produced. Wright is a piano player and music lover and his narrative about music is even more enjoyable. His accounts of artist Donald Judd, Marfa, and West Texas is what captivated me the most about this book even though I learned so much about the legislative rivalry and underhand plots.
Interesting facts like the one about the Humane Society of the United States estimates that there are more tigers living in captivity in Texas than the three thousand that are thought to be living in the wild kept me intrigued until the end. You will not be able to put this book down. It is that good!
