The new Laredo Outlet Shoppes opened its doors on March 16, 2017. The best thing about it is that it is located right along the Rio Grande River. Yes! from the food court terrace one can watch pedestrians stroll across from Mexico using the international pedestrian bridge and into the outlet shops. One can also see cars heading to Mexico and the green lawn of the park along the river. A great view!

All calm and happy like it was in 1999. No border wall, no machine guns just people enjoying a day shopping. It would not be a bad idea to have kayak or boat rides on the river. It is that type of feeling so close to the land of manana.

Laredo was founded in 1755, and there are plenty of historical buildings just a few feet away from this new brightly colored edifice right there in the heart of the city. Tourism folks tell me that visitor traffic has increased already and they hope it capitalizes in sales taxes. It is believed that most Mexican travelers will continue north to San Antonio or Dallas, but the new bright shiny new designer outlet shops might just be what lures them to stay and shop in Laredo. Even if for a short time. How will this building change this historic downtown? time will tell, but for now people are having a great time.

On the featured photograph you see the mall on the right, a tall round high rise in the center (first built as a Holiday Inn) and now for sale, and to the left the tranquil Rio Grande River or the Rio Bravo as it is known on the Mexican side of this border.
