Why I will not watch the Fifty Shades of Grey Movie

A couple of years ago, and after years and years of yo-yo diets, bingeing in front of the TV, and postponing outdoor walks it finally dawned on me: my body is not my own.

As one gets older, things that used to be important seem less so, and we come to value family and friendship as the most precious gifts bestowed on us. Some of us rethink our Christianity engaging in deeper thoughts on the meaning of life.

Some days we are more receptive than others, and I truly believe it is in those days when God manifests His message to us. He patiently waits for us to be ready to hear His voice. It was during one of these times that this bible verse made a tremendous impact on me:

1 Corinthians 18-20

Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

It hit me like a splash of cold water: my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and not my own.  What a reckoning. This may sound silly to some, but to me it was all I needed to reconsider my eating habits, my thoughts and even my exercise routine. What do I think about? How do I filter my not-so-good feelings? And by filter I mean decidedly removing them even if it takes several tries.  Only a sincere determination to be a worthy temple can help, but I promise you this is a difficult task.

A temple is an extremely important place, so I try my best to keep it spotless. But that last verse – you have been bought with a price – is something I can’t dismiss, for it overwhelms me when I recall the “price.”  Countless times we hear that God created us in his image, and that He loves us beyond understanding. If you have not seen videos of a fetus developing inside a woman’s womb, please make a point of watching them. We are an amazing miracle!

My first grandchild was born a month ago tomorrow, a beautiful baby girl. There is no doubt that the tremendous love emanating from the new parents is what provokes the baby to smile and sleep so peacefully. I watch her so helplessly relying on her parents’ love to hold her gently, feed her and embrace her.  I once heard someone say that it is love what bonds things together. True love that has much to do with the love God felt when He created us, and the love we have for ourselves because we know what has been entrusted to us: to be a temple for the Holy Spirit and not our own.

Oh and why I will not watch the Fifty Shades of Grey movie so untimely released on Valentine’s Day weekend… do I really need to say more?
